One town took the number one spot, but there were 15 other amazing places loved as well. Outside magazine developed a score, the O-Score, to combine several factors, such as miles of trails, number of bike shops, unemployment rates, and median incomes. The O-Score also included an editors’ choice variable. The top city was crowned Best Town Ever.

The number one Best Town Ever is Duluth, Minnesota, with an O-Score of 88. The city stretches 26 miles along Lake Superior and has 178 miles of wooded trails, 16 trout streams, and 6,834 acres of city parkland. Mayor Don Ness said, “Despite the weather, or maybe because of it, Duluthians are super passionate about this city.” With an O-Score of 80, Provo, Utah, ranked second.
The locals have named the city “Happy Valley,” which is between the 95,000-acre Utah Lake and the 11,000-foot Wasatch Range. Over 75 percent of the population identify as Mormon, but the region is becoming more diverse. Two universities, Utah Valley and Brigham Young, have over 60,000 students, bringing many youthful ideas and energy to the area.
