Author Roya Hakakian was 19 when she, along with her mother, escaped Iran in the 80s.
Her book, Beginner’s Guide to America: For the Immigrant and the Curious, describes what it is like to leave everything behind and begin building a new life in America. She entered the airport in the US and immediately noticed name tags on everyone’s shirts and she thought, “By God, all of them Americans!” She had left behind a monochrome life, and this diverse human landscape was almost unthinkable! Such diversity! She admits she was disoriented in every way possible, and it wasn’t jet lag. Everything looked so different than anything she had ever seen. Hakakian said a guide explaining the ins and outs of life in America would have been wonderful when she first arrived.
